Fraud can steal your sense of financial security. It can show up in unauthorized transactions on your account, stolen cards or information, or even suspicious phone calls or emails. Scammers get trickier each year with new ways to steal your information. By recognizing what possible fraud looks like, remaining vigilant, and safeguarding your information you can lessen the chances that you could be impacted by fraud.

Security Tools Included with an HFS FCU Membership

At HFS Federal Credit Union we take fraud seriously. As a member, you have access to tools that can help you stop fraud in its tracks. These include banking alerts via text or email, secure login to Online Banking, the CardValet App and more.

  • 2-step Verification

    • When logging in to Online Banking, not only will you enter your username and password, but you’ll receive a unique secure access code granting access to your account. This access code is sent to the email or phone number listed on your account. Each login will require a secure access code, unless you authorize your device. This prevents scammers from accessing your account from an unauthorized device.

    Fingerprint Authorization

    • One easy way to log in to Online Banking securely is using fingerprint technology with our HFS App. This type of technology comes with some iPhone models including the iPhone 6s, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, and more (called Touch ID). Some versions of the Google Pixel phones as well as Android devices, including the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy note 4 also have fingerprint authorization technology.

    Apple Face ID

    • The HFS App is also compatible with devices that have Face ID – another feature making logging in to Online Banking easy and secure. This is available on versions of the iPhone, such as the iPhone X, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS.
  • Banking Alerts

    • Banking alerts are a great tool to keep you notified of what’s happening with your account. You can set up your own account alerts within Online Banking and choose the ones that fit your needs. We also have a Fraud Detection System that will notify you by phone if potential fraud is spotted within your account.

    Bank Account Changes

Alerts are simple to set up within your Online Banking account. Just go to Settings and choose Alerts to start customizing yours.

    • Account Alerts: when the balance in your account is more than, less than, or exactly a certain amount
    • History Alerts: Triggered from withdrawals, check number, deposit or description
    • Online Transaction Alerts: Check reorders, funds transfers or stopped payments

    Withdrawals

    • Alerts can be set up through Online Banking
    • For debit card transactions specifically, members can download the HFS Cards App and can choose to get notified of transactions.

    Suspicious Activities

    • When a suspicious transaction is detected on your account, such as a transaction made in a different state or country, our Fraud Detection System may call you with a recorded message regarding possible fraudulent activity. When you receive this call, we suggest calling us back right away at (808) 930-1400, or visit your nearest HFS branch, to either confirm that it is fraudulent, or confirm that the transaction does in fact belong to you.
      • Once a fraudulent transaction has cleared your account, or even if it’s still pending, we are not able to stop it from going through. However, we can assist you in disputing the transaction to start the claim process.

    Contact Info Change on Account

    • If you need to make a change to your contact information, we only allow those changes to be made in person in a branch. This is a way to keep your information safe and verify that you in fact want these changes made.

    Multiple Failed Account Login Attempts

    • If someone is trying to access your account, being notified of their attempts in real time can help you stop fraud before it happens. Set up alerts for login attempts within your Online Banking account to be notified by email or text any time invalid login attempts are submitted.

This notifies us to expect transactions from those locations and helps us better protect your money.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Depending on the type of transaction being disputed, the claim process can take up to 90 days to complete.

  • For a question about an ongoing claim, it’s best for a member to call the card issuer’s customer service line:

    • For debit card transactions: 1-855-251-1788
    • For credit card transactions: 1-844-546-8218
  • If you have access to a branch location, we are able to instant issue a new debit card for you to pick up and start using right away. If you live off island, we would recommend using checks or an alternate means of payment until your replacement card arrives in the mail.

  • In some cases, yes. Upon completion of the dispute your money can be returned. However, this all depends upon the type of fraud that has taken place. If information, such as card numbers, was given out willingly the card issuer can claim that it is not fraud. This is why it is so important to always safeguard your financial information.
